Palaeontology is really important for understand how human actions will impact on our planet and biodiversity. The geological record of animal life goes back over 500 million years and contains evidence of at least five mass extinction events when the majority of life was wiped out by catastrophic climate change. By studying how ancient life responded and adapted to these extinction events, we can build accurate models of how modern ecosystems will change in the current reality of climate change.

Palaeontology has another major contribution to make: it has a unique appeal and ability to instil curiosity and wonder in people of all ages about our amazing planet. This is critical to inspiring young people in science and in scientific careers.
