This is a fun experiment that is fast and not expsnf. It’s caused by the physical presence of a material with high surface roughness (the mentos) in the fizzy drink (the diet coke) which is supersaturated with CO2. When you open the bottle the CO2 will nucleate on the sides of the bottle but it happens much faster if there’s something in the liquid (i.e. the mentos).
